Kebbi School Girls Abduction: Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Demands Immediate Action and Accountability

By Kelvin Obambon

The Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong on Tuesday took to the floor of the Senate to strongly condemn the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State, describing the lack of safety for children pursuing education as “unacceptable.”

Senator Ekpenyong expressed grave concern over the incident, stating that children who strive to “better their lives, uplift their communities, and contribute to the growth of our nation are no longer safe.”

In response to the crisis, he called for the immediate passage of a firm resolution by the Senate. This resolution, he proposed, should re-invite the heads of the nation’s security agencies, but this time with a key difference; they must be presented with ultimatums, clear accountability benchmarks, and specified consequences for failure.

Beyond the immediate crisis response, the Senator also emphasized the need for long-term structural changes to combat insecurity. He urged the Senate to strengthen national laws, reinforce the security architecture by appropriating the necessary resources.

He also called for intensified oversight on all agencies entrusted with safeguarding the Nigerian populace, urging the Senate to stand united with the current administration in its efforts to bring an end to the “decades-old war against banditry and terrorism.”
