OMAHA, Neb. (TCD) — A Kansas man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, burying her body in a shallow grave in another state, and fleeing to Central America.
KETV-TV reports Aldrick Scott was sentenced May 30, about two months after he was found guilty of first-degree murder, use of a weapon, and tampering with evidence for the November 2022 killing of Cari Allen. The judge also handed him a sentence of 45 to 60 years for the last two charges, plus 532 days of time served.
Allen was reported missing to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Omaha on Nov. 20, 2022. She was last seen alive the night before. Detectives identified Scott as a person of interest in the case and traveled to Topeka, Kansas, to speak with him. When they got there, they found out Scott traveled out of the United States and had not returned. They issued a warrant for his arrest for kidnapping, and he was eventually captured in Belize on Dec. 6, 2022.
Allen remained missing until her body was found in a shallow grave outside Topeka on Dec. 21, 2022.
According to KETV, prosecutors argued during the trial that Scott drove to Omaha and saw that Allen was on a date. One of Allen’s friends testified that Allen was “blowing up her phone” while she was out by calling her several times and sending her a Facebook message that he “caught her in a lie.”
When she got home, he shot her in the chest. Scott put Allen’s body in a trash bag and covered up the bullet holes in her house with plaster.
Scott’s attorneys said Scott and Allen got into a fight when she came home. They claimed Allen pulled out a gun and it went off, killing her. Allen’s family, however, said she did not own a gun.
KETV reports the judge told Scott at his sentencing, “It was clear that you could not take the breakup with Cari Allen. Your obsession motivated the crimes you stand convicted of.”
