The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), distributed relief items to 160 households affected by the 2024 flood disaster on Friday.
The relief, donated by the Federal Government and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was to support victims recovering from the devastation.
The distribution exercise was inaugurated by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, who was represented by Alhaji Wada Sagagi, Chief of Staff at the Government House in Kano.
The governor commended the efforts and assured the victims of continued government support in addressing the impacts of floods and other natural disasters.
Speaking during the event, NEMA’s Director-General, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, stated that the intervention was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to alleviate the hardships faced by flood victims.
Represented by Nura Abdullahi, Coordinator of NEMA’s Kano Territorial Office, Umar clarified that the relief was not a compensation for losses but a gesture to help families rebuild.
“Kano state was selected for this intervention due to the high number of affected persons and the urgency of their needs. The UAE Embassy’s donation of 160 cartons of humanitarian relief items, including 20 varieties of food such as rice, salt, wheat flour, Quaker oats, and oil, is a significant contribution,” Umar explained.
Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, urged beneficiaries to utilize the relief items effectively to meet their families’ needs.
Asabe Ibrahim, one of the recipients, expressed gratitude and noted that the assistance would help in easing the burden caused by the disaster.
