The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested two suspects for supplying weapons to bandits operating in the Zaria area.
The suspects, identified as Abdulaziz Habibu and Nuhu Thomas, are residents of Dogon Dawa, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In a statement released on Monday, by Mansur Hassan, the police spokesperson in Kaduna, confirmed that operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit intercepted the suspects on August 14.
The arrests happened at about 6:00pm in Madaci village, Zaria, where the suspects were found in possession of a fabricated AK-47 rifle.
“On Aug. 14, at about 1800 hours, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit successfully intercepted two male suspects in possession of a fabricated AK-47 rifle at Madaci village, Zaria.”
“During interrogation, the suspects confessed they were involved in illicit selling and supplying of arms to bandits operating in the Zaria area of the state.
“Their confessions have provided crucial leads, and they are currently cooperating with the police in ongoing investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending their accomplices.
“At about 0800 hours, the DPO of Tafa Division, acting on credible information received from a reliable source, led a surveillance team to Gidan Abeh village, Kagarko LGA,” the statement reads.
The police in a separate incident on August 18, officers from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) stationed in Kuriga thwarted an attempted abduction on the outskirts of Kuriga village.
According to the police, two armed men on motorcycles attempted to abduct two farmers but were forced to flee after a brief exchange of gunfire with the responding officers.
The farmers, who sustained head injuries during the assault, received treatment at Kuriga Primary Health Care Centre and have since been discharged.
“On Aug 18, about 6:30 hrs, officers of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) stationed in Kuriga, responded swiftly to gunfire heard on the outskirts of the village.
“Upon arrival, they encountered two armed men on motorcycles attempting to abduct two farmers. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued, forcing the bandits to flee and abandon their captives.
“The rescued victims suffered head injuries inflicted by the assailants and were treated at the Kuriga Primary Health Care centre. They have since been discharged,” the statement added.
The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Audu Dabigi, commended the efforts of the officers involved in the operations. He also called on the public to continue supporting the police with information that could assist in maintaining security across the state.
