Legendary fighting game player Justin Wong recently released a video that teaches how to beat players in fighting games that are actually better than you. It’s a crazy concept, but Wong has declared that he’s able to play a fighting game that he doesn’t practice on the regular and defeat other players in tournament sets.
Wong states that learning fighting game fundamentals is important as it’s something that will carry over into all fighting games. Additionally, learning basic fighting game fundamentals will also expediate the process of learning a new fighting game.
Another tip from Justin Wong is to just sit back and block. By doing this, it’s possible to really observe what the opponent is trying to do during periods of offense.
Needless to say, it’s generally a good idea to copy players that are better than you as a way of improving. Be sure to take plenty of mental notes as the opponent demonstrates how the game is meant to be played.
It’s also stated to be important to understand the archetypes of fighting games. Once you learn how to play a Shoto type character in one fighting game, those skills should theoretically transfer over to other fighting games.
