Tonight Manchester United experienced yet another draw when they travelled to Turkey to take on Jose Mourinho and his Fenerbahce squad in the Europa League.
United entered the game with two Europa League draws against FC Twente and Porto, whilst Fenerbahce were in a better position, having beaten Union SG and drawing to FC Twente.
The Red Devils were the first off the mark, with Christian Eriksen adding to his Europa League tally in the 15th minute, with new boy Joshua Zirkzee setting up the Danish international.
The rest of the first half was relatively quiet, however, Fenerbahce came out fighting with Youssef En Nesyri grabbing his first goal of the competition thanks to an assist from Allan Saint-Maximin.
With the sides now drawing, tensions were high, with Jose Mourinho getting drawn into the action in the 57th minute, ultimately getting sent off.
Why Jose Mourinho was sent off
The Portuguese boss received his marching orders just before the hour mark after he felt his side were penalised by not being awarded a penalty.
Manuel Ugarte made contact with Bright Osayi-Samuel just as the attacker passed the ball, immediately then throwing himself on the ground. The referee, Clement Turpin, decided there was nothing in it so ordered play to continue with no interest in checking VAR, with a reply showing minimal contact between the pair.
However, this decision enraged Mourinho and the Fenerbahce bench who all reacted furiously.
United’s Diogo Dalot kicked the ball out of play to pause the game for Osayi-Samuel to be attended to, with the fourth official restoring order to the home team’s dugout. However, Turpin marched over and resented a red card, with Mourinho making his way to the platform behind the bench.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho commented: “The referee told me something incredible.”
He continued: “During the game, at 100mph, he had one eye on the penalty situation and one eye on the bench and on my behaviour. That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”
United’s serious injury
However, this wasn’t the end of the drama, with United suffering a serious injury to winger Antony.
The Brazilian came on in the 73rd minute for Marcus Rashford, however had to be stretchered off 16 minutes later, with an injury to his ankle.
After the game the winger was seen leaving the stadium with a crutch and moonboot, indicating this could be a big blow for the attacker.
