Joe Rogan plays the Dead or Alive fighting game series and apparently got his ass kicked by his daughter in it
Joe Rogan is one of the largest podcasters in the world with his show The Joe Rogan Experience reaching an average of 11 million people tuning in per episode. He is a veteran in the martial arts world, provides commentary for the UFC, is a renowned stand up comedian, and is also, apparently, a fan of the long-running fighting game franchise, Dead or Alive.
Yes, the great Joe Rogan used to be heavily into Quake way back when, but these days it looks like he’s taken a dip into the wonderful world of fighting games to get some friendly casuals in with his family. In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe recalled playing Dead or Alive against his daughter and getting his ass kicked by her.
The clip comes from JRE episode #1926 featuring Matt McCusker and Shane Gillis. In the 45 second bit of footage, which was isolated and shared by a Twitter user named sugarc0maa, Rogan can be seen telling his guests about his experience with Dead or Alive. Warning, there’s a bit of NSFW language in the following clip.
“I play that karate game, is it Dead or Alive? It’s a f***ing great karate game,” Joe began. “My daughter kept jacking me up.”
Joe goes on to say that his daughter was playing as a small female character and describes a spinning head kick attack that she kept using to beat him.
When Joe’s producer Jamie pulled up screenshots of the game, Rogan confirmed that the character his daughter was using in their matches was Marie Rose. This means that they were likely playing one of the entries in the Dead or Alive 5 series or they were throwing down in Dead or Alive 6 as Marie can be found in both.
The Dead or Alive series is developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. Making its debut with the original Dead or Alive in 1996, the franchise is a fast-paced 3D fighting game that uses real-life martial arts as the inspiration for its combat, as well as a counter system or “Triangle System” that essentially works like Rock-Paper-Scissors using the game’s three main actions: strikes, holds, and throws.
Marie Rose is a more recent addition to the game’s roster, making her playable debut in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Arcade on December 24, 2013. Rose uses the Russian Systema fighting style, and this popular fighter has gone on to make playable appearances in several other Dead or Alive titles including Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate (2014), Dead or Alive 5 Last Round (2015), Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 (2016), Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation (2017), and Dead or Alive 6 (2019).
“My daughter kept f***ing me up,” Joe explained. “She was so happy. I was SO upset with myself.”
Rogan reiterated how great of a game Dead or Alive is and noted how addicting it is to play. That having been said, I don’t get the impression that Joe is a hardcore fighting game player or fan, so it’s funny and heartwarming to hear him describe the salt that us folks in the fighting game community know all too well when losing to his daughter.

Fans haven’t heard much on the front of a new Dead or Alive title lately, with 2019’s Dead or Alive 6 being the most recent installment released.
Back in November of last year, Team Ninja creative director Tom Lee did make a statement about a slide that was shown during a Team Ninja presentation that seemed to suggest a reboot for both Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden (another of the company’s major franchises) was in the works. Unfortunately, Lee tapered expectations by stating that there was nothing to share about either franchise at the time.
