Joe Joyce made a ‘serious statement’ in the heavyweight division with imperious ‘granite jaw’ helping seal a win against a nobly resilient Joseph Parker.

A breath-taking fight finally came to an end in the eleventh round when Parker’s astonishing defence was ended by a stunning left hand knockout from Joyce.

Joyce, 37, is now the WBO interim heavyweight world champion, and with an undefeated record, his best of the rest victory has put him right up among the elite.

Both fighters battled like warriors as they ate punch after punch, but Joyce hardly looked flustered as Parker’s best efforts barely left a dent.

Englishman Joyce, now 15-0 in his short career, looked like he had the fight won early on with New Zealander Parker stumbling as early as the third round.

“Parker looks like he’s gassed already,” said talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver, but somehow he battled back.

Parker’s corner looked worried, as did great friend Tyson Fury and father John watching on, but the 30-year-old junior fighter somehow regathered and had a second wind in the fifth round.

But despite a number of brilliant strikes from Parker, Joyce was barely flustered, which left talkSPORT’s punditry team stunned.

Oliver asked: “Is he about to make a statement that he’s imperious to huge punches and he’s a serious force in the heavyweight division?”

“Parker is landing some almighty blows here the granite jaw of Joyce is made from supernatural stuff,” Andy Clarke added.

Adam Catterall continued: “Are we seeing any dent in Joyce? There was a moment I thought Parker was going to break his wrist punching Joyce, this is huge.

“This is what you call a proper slobberknocker, they’re just having it, this is what you get when you put the best against the best.”

Parker was bloodied but battled on, and both titans kept coming forward despite their defences being breached again and again.

Parker would have been disheartened to see his opponent barely bruised, and eventually in the eleventh he finally came crashing down.

“One of the best heavyweight fights you’ll see,” said Fury in the aftermath. “Credit to both, they both did very very well, the better man won on the night.”

Asked if he would take on Joyce: “Yeah no problem,” said Fury, but after that showing, it may be Joyce not having problems against some of the heavyweight elite.
