Clarence Alexander Avant, often known as “The Black Godfather,” is an American music executive, entrepreneur, and film producer who was born on February 25, 1931.
Clarence Alexander Avant was the oldest of eight children born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He went to a Greensboro one-room school till ninth grade. He attended Dudley High School in Greensboro for his freshman and sophomore years before migrating to New Jersey as a teenager in 1947.
Avant worked as a stock clerk at Macy’s and for a law directory in New Jersey. In the 1950s, he worked as a manager at Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, which was owned by promoter Teddy Powell.
