Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi produced a match-winning performance for Fulham to lead them to a stunning 3-2 win over Liverpool in a Premier League encounter on Sunday.
Iwobi scored a goal, and provided one assist to hand the hosts the maximum points at the Craven Cottage.
The Nigerian international played a vital role to end Liverpool’s 26-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Alexis Mac Allister’s gave Liverpool an early lead with an unstoppable strike in the 13th minute.
Ryan Sessegnon quickly restored parity for the hosts, finishing off Andreas Pereira’s cross with a close range effort.
Nine minutes later, Iwobi made it 2-1 for Fulham after he intercepted Andy Robertson’s poor cross-field ball to unleash a strike which deflected off the Liverpool defender to sail into the net.
The Super Eagles midfielder assisted Rodrigo Muniz to make it 3-1 in the 37th minute.
Luis Diaz reduced the deficit for Liverpool in the second half but the visitors were not able to complete the comeback as Fulham held on for a memorable win.
The result means Liverpool failed to take advantage of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Everton on Saturday.
Iwobi has now scored eight goals, and recorded five assists in the Premier League in 31 appearances for Fulham this season.
The victory moved Fulham up to the eighth position on the Premier League table.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot blamed his team’s errors for allowing Fulham to take a 3-1 lead in the first half.
He said, “That was a difficult spell of 14 minutes [three goals conceded]. Apart from [Fulham’s] quality and finishing, it was mostly to do with our errors.
“In general, we are not making many of these errors – let alone three in one game. Our second half performance was so much better, but it is hard to win a game at this level if you concede three in the first half.
“Unfortunately, we lacked time in the end to score a third. People want to make stories about their job. Many teams find it difficult to play Fulham. The second half’s performance was outstanding. We had chances but in the end we lacked time.”
The Reds are now 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, and they need a maximum of 11 more points to win the Premier League title.
Up next for Fulham is an away clash against Bournemouth on Monday, while Liverpool will welcome West Ham to Anfield.
