Italy 2-0 Spain: Chiellini and Pelle strikes send defending Champions (Spain) back home #Euro2016

Spain’s defence of their European title has come to an end at the round-of-16 stage after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy on Monday.

The Euro 2008 and 2012 winners were seen as one of the favourites to win the tournament again this year, but were sent home thanks to goals from Giorginio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle.

Giorgio Chiellini prodded home in the first half, finishing the rebound after David de Gea saved Eder’s free-kick.

Alvaro Morata missed the chance to equalise with a header after the break and at the other end De Gea saved when Eder was clean through on goal.

Antonio Conte’s men took the lead after 33 minutes when Eder’s free kick was saved by David De Gea, but Emanuele Giaccherini pounced on the rebound but failed to convert, allowing Chiellini to rush in and knock it over the line.

Spain pushed on for an equaliser and came close several times, most stunningly through Andres Iniesta, who forced a strong save from Gianluigi Buffon with a thunderous shot from outside the box.

Buffon was again on hand in the 89th minute when he pulled off an excellent save to deny Gerard Pique.

And the game was killed off moments later when Pelle was found at the back post and volleyed home to give his side the win.

Italy survived Spanish pressure before Graziano Pelle scored a late second to set up a quarter-final against Germany.
