Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers was released in the arcades back in September 10, 1993 for Japan and September 11, 1993 for North America. The game would later be ported to the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis home consoles on June 25, 1994 for Japan and July 18, 1994 for North America.
As implied by the expansion’s title, this entry in the Street Fighter 2 series introduced four new challengers for the roster to fight against the likes of Ryu and Ken. The added characters were Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long, and T. Hawk.
Throughout the Street Fighter 2 entries that followed, Cammy was generally perceived as being one of the worst fighters on the tier list. Despite this, she ended up becoming the most popular of the four new challengers.
Though all four of these new challengers would eventually return for Street Fighter 4, only Cammy would also be featured on the base rosters for Street Fighter 5 and Street Fighter 6. Only Dee Jay would return for Street Fighter 6, while nobody but Cammy would make a playable appearance in Street Fighter 5.
It’s also interesting to note that Cammy appeared in Street Fighter 5 before Guile, Blanka, and E. Honda, three of the original “World Warrior” combatants that only joined Street Fighter 5 as DLC. Based on this, it feels like Cammy is one of the most popular and iconic characters of the Street Fighter franchise.
Cammy’s most recognizable appearance has her in a green thong leotard with the Delta Red insignia adorned on it, braided hair, a red beret, red socks, black combat boots, and red gauntlets. Supposedly, Cammy’s preference for the thong leotard is due to how it enables her optimal speed, mobility, and flexibility.
However, there are some minor differences between Cammy as she appears in Street Fighter 2 (as well as Street Fighter 4) and Street Fighter 5. In Street Fighter 2, camouflaged paint has been smeared over Cammy’s legs.
For Street Fighter 5, Cammy is instead wearing a harness around her leotard while a gun holster is wrapped around her right thigh. As it turns out, this was actually based on one of Cammy’s earlier drafts when she was initially being designed for Street Fighter 2.
Ultimately though, the gun holster is just for show. Cammy has always been a close-quartered rush down character who doesn’t ever use firearms or projectiles during gameplay. Thanks to her vast mobility options, she always has a way of closing the distance between herself and the opponent.
Of course, eagle-eyed observers should be able to notice the presence of both the camouflaged paint and harnesses that have been incorporated into IrisChing1229’s Cammy White cosplay, though it should be noted that she has the gun holster wrapped around her left thigh instead of her right.
This is actually how Cammy appears in Street Fighter 6 while fighting in her alternate costume. Essentially, Cammy’s Street Fighter 6 alternate is an amalgamation of how the character appeared in Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 5 as it incorporates elements from both appearances.
