The Iranian government has rejected sanctions imposed on it by the European Union and the UK over support to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The sanctions were imposed on Monday following allegations of missile transfers to Russia to aid them in their invasion of Ukraine which started in February 2022.
The sanctions, which include an asset freeze on Iran’s national airliner Iran Air and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, is in response to the country’s alleged transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia.
UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, speaking at the United Nations Security Council in New York on Monday, said “Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable.
“Alongside our international partners, we were clear that any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would face a significant response.
“We reiterate our call on Iran to cease its support for Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.” he added.
Responding, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Esmaeli Baghaei, on Tuesday, denied claims of missile transfers to Russia.
“Iran considers the imposition of new sanctions by the European Union and the United Kingdom against a number of Iranian individuals and legal entities on the false claim of sending ballistic missiles to Russia as an unjustified act that contradicts the norms of international law,” Baghaei said, according to the foreign ministry’s Telegram channel.
He added that the sanctions violated international law, including the freedom of navigation and maritime trade.
