Manchester United’s recruitment approach has often been scrutinised, with a long-standing habit of signing established players in their prime rather than investing in younger talent for long-term growth.
This strategy, while effective at times, frequently led to short-term fixes rather than sustainable progress.
During Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford, this pattern became even more evident as the Portuguese manager opted to bring in experienced players who could provide immediate results.
Mourinho’s transfer policy revolved around reliability, often leaning towards veterans who had proven themselves at the highest level.
One such player was Nemanja Matic, who joined United from Chelsea in 2017, reuniting with Mourinho for a second time.
Matic brought stability to United’s midfield but was viewed as part of the club’s short-term strategy rather than a long-term solution.
Now, years after leaving Old Trafford, Matic’s name has resurfaced in Premier League circles.

Ipswich Town are reportedly eyeing the Serbian international for a potential return to England.
Matic was earlier linked before the start of the 2024/25 season to join Fulham.
According to Foot Mercato, Ipswich are considering a move for the 35-year-old midfielder as they prepare for a crucial second half of the season.
Ipswich believe Matic’s experience and familiarity with the Premier League could provide much-needed leadership.
Ipswich’s interest highlights the value still placed on Matic’s qualities.
Particularly his ability to control the tempo and provide a defensive shield in midfield.
However, the East Anglian side could face competition from Serie A outfit Como, where former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is currently in charge.
Lyon, Matic’s current club, are reportedly open to offers this winter, making a transfer more likely if the right bid is tabled.
Ipswich’s pursuit of Matic reflects their desire to add experience to the squad.
A move very much reminiscent of the United approach during Mourinho’s reign.
