Interior Minister Urges Newly Promoted Paramilitary Officers To Boost Nigeria’s Security

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called on the newly promoted senior officers in the four paramilitary agencies under the Interior Ministry to enhance their efficiency and innovative skills to build a robust internal security system for the nation.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo made the call at the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Abuja, where Deputy Comptroller Generals and Deputy Commandant Generals of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service (FFS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were decorated with their new ranks.

In a statement released on Thursday by Babawale Afolabi, NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, the minister assured the officers of the Federal Government’s support.

He said promotions within these agencies are based on merit, seniority, availability of vacancies, and performance evaluations.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated that the era of career stagnation due to lack of connections or godfathers is over.

Tunji-Ojo commended personnel of the paramilitary agencies for making tireless efforts towards the stability of the country, saying they deserve incentives from the current administration.

He specifically commended the NSCDC for effectively protecting the nation’s critical national assets and infrastructure, stating that the Corps is becoming more robust, efficient, and professional in discharging its responsibilities.

Earlier, CG Ahmed Ja’afaru, Secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Service Board (CDCFIB), noted that the board has secured its independence from the Office of the Head of Service.

He attributed the achievement to the dynamic leadership of the Board Chairman, who is also the Minister of Interior. Ja’afaru highlighted the successful and unprecedented 2023 promotion exercise and expressed confidence in replicating the same success in 2024.

He disclosed that 79 senior officers participated in the promotion exercise, resulting in the decoration of 14 senior management officers—7 in the NIS, 3 in the NSCDC, 1 in the FFS, and 3 in the NCoS.

The Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration, DCGI George Chamlong Didel, while speaking on behalf of the newly promoted officers, thanked President Tinubu for the honour to serve the nation and pledged continuous loyalty to their respective services.

Similarly, NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, urged the newly decorated Deputy Commandants General in his service to mentor their subordinates and serve with dedication and loyalty. He charged them to uphold their new positions with prestige and respect.

On his part, the Director of Legal Services, Barr Umar Aliyu Mohammed, administered the Oath of Office to the three newly promoted NSCDC management officers—DCG Pedro Awili Ideba, DCG Mohammed Lawal Haruna fdc, and DCG Philip Ayuba fcai.

Speaking after the oath-taking, DCG Pedro, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed joy and pledged support to the Commandant General and top management to consolidate on the ongoing reforms.
