NBA Jam remains a special piece of video game and arcade history that’s never really been replicated to the same level as the 1993 original, especially for Midway and Mortal Kombat fans.

Combo maestro Desk is stepping away from his usual jam session with his latest video exploring the hidden Mortal Kombat characters and references hiding within NBA Jam.

Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile and Raiden can be unlocked in the original arcade versions of the game with Desk showing off the specific names and birthdays that need to be inputted to do so — except for Ed Boon it seems, who can be played using EJB for the name and February 22 for the date.

You cann’t have Mortal Kombat characters without at least a little violence too, so he also makes sure to include the whole part about how Fatalities can be unlocked and what they do.

On top of the playable characters in the game, desk goes out of his way to point out other MK references in NBA Jam as well as their exact origins like Liu Kang plus Kano appearing on the sportscaster desk — and even a teaser for Mortal Kombat 3.

Unfortunately, these fun bonus characters were removed from later revisions on NBA Jam for one reason or another, but Scorpion and Sub-Zero wearing basketball shorts will never be forgotten.
