Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has revealed that he is not targeting Rashidi Yekini’s goalscoring record for Nigeria.
The Galatarsaray forward scored his 23rd goal for Nigeria against Benin Republic to equal Segun Odegbami’s record for the national team.
Up next for Osimhen is to overtake Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 appearances to become Nigeria’s top scorer.
He has now revealed that he is not focusing his attention on breaking the record, while hailing the late Yekini as the greatest Nigerian striker.
Osimhen said: “No, no. I really don’t care about this. I just want to do my job and try to win games, score goals, and provide a lot of assists for my team.
“Then if I equal it, I equal it, if I surpass it, I surpass it, but that doesn’t take away the fact that Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker the Super Eagles have ever had. This record stood for a very, very long time and it still stands, so I think we should give him his flowers and also celebrate him.
Osimhen has been impressive for Nigeria since making his debut for Nigeria against South Africa in 2017.
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles star, Mutiu Adepoju has backed Osimhen to break Rashidi Yekini’s goalscoring record.
He said: “Osimhen has all it takes to break Yekini’s record.
“He’s a very committed player, gives everything for the national team and so it’s very possible for him to break Yekini’s record.”
Osimhen has scored eight goals and recorded four assists for Galatarsaray since joining the club from Napoli in the summer.
