Tragedy struck at an Islamiyyah school in the Kuchibiyu Community of Bwari Area Council, Abuja, on Monday, when a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated, killing one student and injuring four others.
The explosion, which occurred around noon, sent shockwaves through the school and its surrounding community. Witnesses reported that the deceased student was carrying the explosive device when it detonated.
Earlier in the day, the school had conducted a resumption assembly to welcome newly admitted students, who had resumed on January 3, 2025.
Emergency responders, including a police bomb disposal unit, quickly arrived at the scene. The injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving urgent medical attention.

Authorities are now probing how the deceased student came into possession of the explosive device and the events leading up to the explosion. The incident has raised serious concerns about security in schools and the growing risks associated with explosive materials falling into the hands of minors.
No official statement has been released by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command regarding the incident. Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, have so far been unsuccessful.
This tragic event has reignited debates about the safety of educational institutions and the need for stricter measures to protect students from such dangers.
