Police Shoot At Journalists, Protesters At MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja

The ongoing protests against hunger have turned bloody in Abuja on Saturday as one death has been recorded after police fired live bullets at journalists and protesters in their bid to disperse them from the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Heavy gun fires could be heard kilometres away when the police, after barricading the stadium, opened fire in what was reportedly “orders from above.”

The protests had converged on day three of the protests with speeches going on and interrupted by occasional chants when a detachment of police officers reinforced those stations close by and moved in immediately, charging at the peaceful protesters.

As journalists and protesters scampered for safety, a Premium Times reporter was aimed at with bullets shattering his car.

The reporter had succeeded to enter his car and was in motion when the police rained bullets on the car.

There were earlier shootings in some parts of the city leading to one death and several injuries which Amnesty International has condemned as an excessive use of force.
