How NetherRealm Studios could save Mortal Kombat 1 according to one pro player

With the recent reveal of Evo 2024 entrant numbers and the last 10 months of consistent complaints from its fan base, Mortal Kombat 1 has been struggling to find harmony with fans.

For all the waning numbers and waxing ill-will, pro player Tweedy feels that the latest MK franchise entry isn’t completely lost quite yet, and in a recent video he articulates a few key moves developers need to make if they want to avoid flawed defeat.

Perhaps the most prominent issue affecting Mortal Kombat 1 is its adherence to the assist-based Kameo system. Though team or multiple-character duels have appeared in previous entries, every single battle in MK1 features the chaos of four characters.

Aside from the fact that Kameo characters currently can affect the outcome of rounds more than they main characters they’re assisting, Tweedy argues that more casual players are relatively averse to the idea of team battle, at least when it comes to an arena like Mortal Kombat where one on one has forever been the norm.

While developers surely aren’t going to remove the game-defining mechanic entirely, they could work to tone down the impact and importance of Kameos in an effort to make the MK1 experience more appealing to more general crowds.

Tweedy’s second piece of advice is an opposing side to this same coin: buff up the main characters and make them more relevant to round outcomes.

The intimidation of having to learn to control two characters simultaneously and the frustrations that can come from having an opponents’ often overwhelming assists pose such a grave threat take the feeling of control out of players’ hands, and returning said control to them as rapidly as possible is crucial in the quest to saving this game.

Tweedy details these first two ideas and delves into a few others in the full video below. Give it a watch and then let us know in the comments what you think of the current state of MK1 and whether or not the proposed changes would lead to it to an overall better place.
