House of Assembly to Support College Students

The Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon John Gaul Lebo has indicated the House' readiness to support student of the College of Education, Akamkpa.

Rt. Hon. Lebo who gave the indication recently when a delegation of the institution’s Students’ Union Government paid a courtesy call at the Speaker’s office in Calabar, observed that it was necessary to support the students particularly on its intellectual and social programmes as these two were crucial aspects of knowledge development.

He also assured the students of the willingness of the House of Assembly to assist in the construction of a relaxation park for the leisure need of the students, adding that the House would also inculcate College of Education students of the institution in its internship and capacity building programmes.

He hinted that ”Early Childhood Education”, a course very critical to the wellbeing of the child which was studied in the Colleges of Education and a few universities in Nigeria would be promoted for adoption as a degree awarding course in the University of Calabar.

The Speaker urged the students to key into the internet so as to maximize its information and academic contents rather than being overly involved in student’s activism or other activities inimical to their academic pursuits. He reminded that youthfulness was not a profession but a formative stage and time to identify and pursue future aspirations.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Students’ Union Government of the College of Education, Akamkpa Comrade Oben Oben Bassey extolled the strides of the Speaker since assumption of office saying that students of the college were inspired by his achievements.

Comrade Bassey while soliciting the Assembly’s support to enable the school achieve a degree awarding status through an enabling law and infrastructural development also appealed to the Assembly for assistance to construct a relaxation park for students of the institution.

The SUG president used the event to formally invite the Speaker to speak on ”Leadership and Productivity” being the lecture topic for the forthcoming students week ceremony.
