Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is working on a new electric two-wheeler product for the Indian market. Honda’s president, MD and CEO, Atsushi Ogata at an event had earlier revealed that the company is aiming for a March 2024 launch of the upcoming electric two-wheeler product. This new electric Honda is being speculated to be an electric scooter and could be launched under the Activa brand name. HMSI however aims to deploy its battery-swapping technology for its customers in the long run.
Honda could tease an early prototype of the upcoming electric scooter when the company announces its plans on March 29th. The prototype is expected to be based on some recent design patents that have come to light, courtesy of Autocar India. The electric scooter is likely to use a derivative of the Honda Activa chassis and will get a fixed battery setup. However, the Japanese two-wheeler maker is motivated to shift to a swappable battery layout eventually.
Honda plans to upgrade its Vithalapur manufacturing facility in Gujarat to accommodate a new EV production line. However, Honda’s Narsapura plant in Karnataka will take over electric vehicle operations.
