Members from the NYPD 84th Precinct Field Intelligence Team along with officers from the 88th precinct were conducting a shooting investigation near 81 N. Portland at the Whitman Houses, after a shot spotter alert on Thursday afternoon.

A witness gave officers the description of a car involved in the shooting incident and cops located the vehicle near Fulton St and Washington Avenue.

Officers started to pursue the vehicle eastbound on Fulton Street and requested additional units for a traffic stop, authorities said

According to police officials, the car driver became aware of officers following close and began evasive maneuvers. The suspect started speeding away and running red lights as they cut through Bed-Stuy with officers closely on their tail.

The suspects traveling southbound eventually made their way onto Utica Avenue where the vehicle became stuck in traffic near 178 Utica Avenue and police advanced.

Officers with guns drawn surrounded the vehicle and started to give verbal commands for vehicle occupants to show their hands. At this moment a male passenger allegedly with a gun in hand attempts to exit the vehicle but the door is blocked by a double parked car and not able to fully open, said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey.

The gun toting suspect is said to have pointed the weapon at police and officers began firing at the man with continued verbal commands to drop the gun.

The female driver exited the car and started to run away as officers were still engaging the armed suspect in the passenger side who was wanted for a homicide.

It’s then an officer yelled out “Baby! Baby!” indicating to other officers that a child was in the vehicle and gunfire stopped, Chief Maddrey said.

A young girl was removed uninjured from the vehicle and the child was transported to a medical facility for evaluation.

The female driver was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit and taken into police custody. She was brought to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries for treatment of two gunshot wounds to the right thigh.

Officers pulled the suspect out of the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds and handcuffed the male. Life saving procedures were performed but the suspect was not able to be saved and pronounced deceased.

A gun with an extended clip was found near the suspect wanted for a vicious homicide that occurred in March of 2024 and has been on the run since.

The investigation into the fatal police shooting in Crown Heights is ongoing.
