The Mortal Kombat 1 roster will soon be growing as Wednesday’s release of the gameplay trailer for fifth and final member of DLC Kombat Pack 1, Homelander, means we’re within a week getting our hands on him.
Said trailer showcased a solid two and a half minutes of what the The Boys main antagonist can do, and a whole lot of that revolves around blasting opponents with eye lasers. Rooflemonger has gone through just about every frame of footage to help us all get an idea of what Homey is capably of, and we’re honestly a tad worried we may have another NetherRealm Studios zoner situation on our hands.
It seems like every franchise has had its problems with overly powerful zoners as the archetype can easily become too strong with just a few over-buffed abilities. That said, NRS has had a notably rough history with the archetype as characters such as (and this is an incomplete list) Mortal Kombat 9’s Kenshi and Freddy Kreuger, Injustice’s Zod and Martian Manhunter, Injustice 2’s Deadshot, and Mortal Kombat 11’s Cetrion.
The character Homelander may most closely resemble Superman from the Injustice games, who has had his own time in the frustratingly overpowered spotlight, as he can blast his heat vision from a ton of various angles (including a projectile-ducking version).
Not only will Homelander be flying about the screen at various heights, he may be mixing up opponents from far away with low, overhead, and anti-air heat vision attacks.
We’re holding out hope that NRS has learned from their past mistakes and given all characters legitimate ways of navigating or countering these traditionally extremely strong tools, but we’ll have to wait and see once the community gets to actually begin exploring the newcomer.
Check out Rooflemonger’s full breakdown all Homelander’s shown abilities as he speculates on their potential and practical uses in the full video below. Please let us know what you think of the character thus far and if you’ll be playing him when he drops on June 4 in Mortal Kombat 1.
If you didn’t see it already, be sure to check out the details on the most recent MK1 patch which focuses primarily on toning Mavado, the most recent Kameo addition to the game, down a bit.
