I’m not sure I can articulate why, exactly, but there’s something especially intriguing to fighting game players about initial character select screens.
We got a bit of new Street Fighter 6 news today during the Capcom Spotlight UK presentation, and though it wasn’t the focal point of said news, we couldn’t help but notice the game’s full 18-fighter character select screen popped up for just a brief moment.
Though we’re all but certain more characters will be added as DLC over the coming months and years, Street Fighter 6 will feature 18 initial roster members upon release on June 2 of this year.
It’s arranged in a four by four array with the game’s protagonist, Luke, and his rival, Jamie, atop the rest. Character designer, Kaname Fujioka, has stated that these two are meant to stand as something of modern Ryu and Ken as the franchise introduces a whole new and younger guard of fresh faces.
Four more of the game’s six brand new characters make up the next row as Manon, Kimberly, Marisa, and Lily sit just below Luke and Jamie. JP, Juri, Dee Jay, and Cammy make up the next row down, and then it’s all World Warriors (in their original SF2 character select order) from there.
Ryu, E. Honda, Blanka, and Guile make up the penultimate row, and then Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief, and Dhalsim close things out. Not only did we get to see the fighters, we got a quick glimpse of the stage select as well.
There are 16 initial arenas in which players can choose to do battle in SF6 including Metro City Downtown, Genbu Temple, Carrier Byron Taylor, Tian Hong Yuan, Ranger’s Hut, Dhalsimer Temple, Old Town Market, Bathers Beach, Fete Foraine, Colosseo, Barmaley Steelworks, Thunderfoot Settlement, King Street, The Macho Ring, and Training Room.
