During the story mode of Mortal Kombat 1, the player is forced to fight against a number of NPC characters. Although Quan Chi and Ermac won’t be officially playable until Winter 2023/2024 and Spring 2024 respectively, the story mode offers a sneak peek at these fighters through special battles with them.
As it turns out, a modder known as Ermaccer has already created a mod that allows the player to use the NPC characters that appear in the story mode, and even a few that don’t. A video has been uploaded to YouTube by SHAAR that demonstrates what these fighters are actually capable of.
Of course, Ermac and Quan Chi are among the NPCs that have been made playable through this method. Just like how they’ve been depicted in the story, their playstyles are most reminiscent of how they played in Mortal Kombat 9.
Similar to how Tanya was changed up from an NPC to a DLC combatant in Mortal Kombat X, we can probably expect Ermac and Quan Chi to play radically different compared to how they do with mods enabled.
Recently, we learned that the Johnny Cage Kameo that was originally planned as DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 has been replaced by “Janet Cage.” Though the character barely had any real influence on the story, Janet Cage did briefly appear in the Mortal Kombat 1 single player story towards the end.
Strangely enough, it’s actually possible to access Janet Cage, though it’s worth noting that she just plays like Johnny Cage. There’s also a Cyber Smoke character that is effectively just Smoke in terms of gameplay.
Perhaps the oddest NPC characters found in the code are female versions of Ermac, Reptile, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Check it all out in the video below:
