The highly-requested fan-favorite samurai Baiken is now back as a playable character in Guilty Gear Strive. This new DLC fighter saw her launch via the Season Pass 1 this week, and fans will be able to purchase her individually starting Monday.

To celebrate the one-armed warrior’s official launch, pixel artist alan_not_allen put together an awesome piece that shows us what Baiken might look like as an old school sprite instead of her modern 3D model.

The Guilty Gear series spent most of its lifespan with in-game characters as beautifully animated sprites, so seeing the new version of Baiken in this style is an absolute treat.

This piece features Baiken with an intense scowl on her face standing in an action stance ready for battle. The artist included two versions of the artwork: a raw version and one with a filter that adds scanlines and an old screen look to replicate what Baiken might have looked like in one of the past games.

Recreating characters from modern fighting titles in the old school art style isn’t uncommon. We recently saw all of King of Fighters 15’s launch roster reimagined as retro-style sprites, and artist fuku_84 also did an excellent job with them.

Check out the awesome retro Baiken artwork below and let us know what you think of Guilty Gear Strive’s latest DLC character in the comments.
