Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, on Wednesday, said she will be president for all Americans if elected in next week’s election.
Harris spoke ahead of her campaign in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, in response to President Joe Biden’s reference to supporters of Republican candidate, Donald Trump as “garbage”.
“I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me,” the vice president said.
Biden made the controversial comment in response to comic star, Tony Hinchcliffe, who sparked controversy by calling Puerto Rico, a US territory, an “island of garbage” during a Trump rally on Sunday.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden was initially quoted as saying on Tuesday, prompting an angry Republican backlash.
“It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, in an interview on ABC News on Wednesday, downplayed the comments made by Biden, saying “he has clarified his remarks”
“Let’s be very clear the vice president and I have made it absolutely clear that we want everyone that’s a part of this. Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric is what needs to end.
“He called this a ‘garbage country’ and continues on with the ‘enemy from within,’.”
“You heard Vice President Harris say and what I say is there’s a place for all of us. “I think America knows the direction we’re going, and I think she’s laid out a new way forward, and that’s what we’re going to do for the next six days, and the rest eight years after that.” he added.
