With Ruben Amorim set to join Manchester United next week, speculation is growing about who he could sign in January. The winter transfer window marks the first chance for Amorim to start making the squad his own, even looking at re-signing former Manchester United stars.
Recent reports have linked The Red Devils with numerous stars, such as Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Rayan Ait-Nouri for the left-back role. Other targets like Marc Casado from Barcelona in midfield and Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the wing have also emerged recently.
However, new reports have linked United with one of their former stars, Alvaro Fernandez.
Fernandez left United this summer to join Benfica for £5 million after a six-month loan at the end of last season.
Now, the left-back has established himself in the starting lineup, even contributing to three goals in 14 games with a goal and two assists.
However, fears are now growing that United are more likely to bring their former defender back to Old Trafford. Their inclusion of a buy-back clause has made it possible for the 23-year-old to return to Old Trafford.
Benfica’s former left-back discusses former Manchester United star, Alvaro Fernandez
Speaking to A Bola, former Benfica left-back Alvaro Magalhaes discussed the potential re-signing of Fernandez. Whilst this move may be great for United, Magalhaes fears losing the left-back now that he has shown such promise with the Portuguese side.
The former defender believes that Fernandez is set to become a world-class star, commenting: “I didn’t see it just now. When he made his debut in the League — he came on in the second half against Gil Vicente, if I remember correctly [3-0] — I saw in him a beautiful left-back. The way he positioned himself, how he touched the ball…
He continued: “For many, the doubts are only now beginning to be dispelled. I feel today that many people have been harming a high-level athlete for a long time At Benfica the best have to play and Carreras is, without a doubt, the best. He was wronged within Benfica, but fortunately he never got discouraged.”
“That ability to react to adversity seems to me to be his strength. Great players only succeed if they are mentally very strong and it seems to me to be the case. Whoever is weak cannot play Benfica, just as he cannot play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, or PSG.
“If he was weak, he would have already been dismissed from Benfica and would be showing quality in another team. Benfica was in time not to lose one of those footballers that we must fight to keep at the club for the quality they have. I hope he has a lot of luck and continues to have a great season.”
Magalhaes then went on to discuss the potential of Benfica losing Fernandez back to United. The former left-back commented: “I only fear that Rúben Amorim will take him to Manchester United.”
He continued: “It seems to me that he has the quality to be one of the first options and looking at the squad I believe that with the new coaching staff he could be a possibility again, especially because the new coach knows him very well from what he saw of him at Benfica.”
