A group of prominent political leaders in Cross River has described the wife of the state governor, Rev (Mrs) Eyoanwan Otu as a beacon of hope for the less privileged in the society.
The group in a statement which was signed by Hon. Eyo Nsa Ekpo Esq, Sir Maurice Effiwatt ksji, Hon. Victor Okon, Hon. Mrs. Ada Egwu, Prof. Emmanuel Eyo Esq., Rev. Hon. James Anam, Hon. Chief Ani Esin and Hon. Joe Etene Esq., said the concept of “Good Governance” as understood by the common man on the street in Nigeria, includes, amongst others, the impact of the government on daily lives of the ordinary and most exposed or vulnerable members of the society.
According to them, within four months in office, the wife of Cross River State Governor, Her Excellency Rev. Eyoanwan Otu, has exhibited an unwavering commitment to reposition the wheels of governance closer to the less privileged members of our society.
They added that in line with the peoples first agenda of this government, Her Excellency, propelled by reason, empathy and concern for the well-being of the average Cross Riverian, has intervened in the following facets of daily lives of the people:

“Wide spread malaria control through the provision of insecticides and
mosquito net across the state.
“Visitation of orphanages and aged people’s home where she donated food items, cloths and generator.
“First of its kind visit by the first lady to Nigerian Custodial Center Calabar, where she prayed and counselled the inmates and advised them to focus on becoming productive citizens at the expiration of their prison sentence or incarceration. At that visit, she paid for the renovation and construction of basic facilities within the premises.
“The street children pet project intended to focus on rehabilitation of street children, thereby reforming and integrating them into the society.
“Free medical outreach in eighteen (18) Local Government Areas of the
State.
“Award of scholarships for students in higher institutions, fatherless children and provision of back to school kits for those in junior secondary schools.
“Donation of wheel chairs, crutches and financial assistance to physically challenged persons.
“Intervention in the area of women rights in rural communities in Obanliku Local Government.
“Hosting of Donor agencies and critical stake holders to focus attention on the needs of rural women in the state
“Hosting of the 23rd women’s council to facilitate and encourage
networking and exchange of ideas between our women.
“These interventions by Her Excellency, coupled with her simplicity and accessibility are significant and reassuring steps towards restoring confidence and faith in governance, and is commendable. The peoples first agenda is gradually coming to fruition, it is indeed true to assert that better days are here again as we look forward to reaping more gains from this dispensation,” the statement reads.
