A high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti, visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Wednesday to present a certified true copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the party’s leadership.
During the meeting, Governor Otti stated that the visit sought to foster clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.
The delegation was received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr Sam Olumekun, along with other national commissioners.
Olumekun reaffirmed the commission’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law in discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
The visit follows the Supreme Court’s April 4 ruling that set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
In a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to pronounce Abure as National Chairman, noting that party leadership matters are internal affairs over which courts lack jurisdiction.
The Supreme Court also noted that Abure’s tenure had already expired and allowed the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and one other, while dismissing the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction.
This development comes after the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) sacked the Abure-led executive in September 2024 and appointed Usman, a former Minister of Finance and ex-senator representing Kaduna South, to lead a 29-member caretaker committee tasked with facilitating the election of new party leadership within 90 days.
