The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, expressed that his triumph at the Supreme Court was a challenging journey.
Mr Mutfwang made these remarks during a church service on Sunday at the ECWA Unity Church in Rayfield, Jos, the state capital.
“One day, we will tell the story of what we passed through, but it has been a tortuous journey, and through it all, we learned to trust Jesus, and he has not failed us,” he said.
The governor attributed the victory to the people of Plateau.
“The victory at the Supreme Court was not a victory for Caleb Mutfwang; it wasn’t a victory for PDP. It was a victory for the people of Plateau state,” he added. “We must not behave like the 10 lepers; we must return quickly and give thanks to God who made it possible.”
Upon his return to the state on Saturday, Mr Mutfwang shared on his X handle on Sunday, “This judgment is historic and highly significant in the political journey of Plateau State. It is the rebirth of a new Plateau where God has demonstrated his sovereignty as the owner and giver of power.”
The Supreme Court on Friday, January 12, upheld Mr Mutfwang as the duly elected governor of Plateau State.
His victory in the March 18 governorship race was contested in court by his political rival, Nentawa Yilwatda of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the Plateau State governorship election petition tribunal had upheld Mr Mutfwang’s victory at the polls, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal in November 2023 overturned the tribunal’s judgement, and Mr Yilwatda was declared the winner of the governorship elections in the state.
In the Apex court’s ruling on Friday, Justice Helen Ogunmuwiju said, “It was very wrong for the Court of Appeal to go into the issue of party congresses. To make matters worse, the party challenging the issue is another party.”
