Vinnitsa, Ukraine, July 27, 2022
The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has faced persecution from schismatics and local and state authorities for years, which has only ramped up since the war began in late February, has received some more positive news from the legal field lately.
In one deanery, courts have put a stop to the illegal practice of reregistering parishes to the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine,” and a number of cases are being brought against officials who support the seizure of churches.
On July 12, a panel of judges upheld the decision of the Kiev Administrative Court prohibiting the Vinnitsa Provincial State Administration from re-registering parish communities in the Murovani Kurylivtsi Deanery of the Mogilev-Podolsk Diocese, reports the local Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos.
“This court decision once again confirms the illegal actions of Igor Saletsky and the administration headed by him, when, instead of observing the constitution and laws of Ukraine, civil servants actually gave the green light to the raider seizures of religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by their decisions,” the church’s page comments.
OrthoChristian Authorities who transferred churches to schismatics now under investigationThe Prosecutor’s Office of the Vinnitsa Province opened criminal proceedings on January 6, specifically concerning the illegal reregistration of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Snitkov.
“>earlier reported that criminal proceedings were opened against Saletsky concerning the illegal reregistration to the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos. Proceedings were also initiated yesterday against representatives of the schismatic OCU who seized the church.
And earlier this month, on July 20, a Rivne court ordered the police to initiate criminal proceedings against the chairman of the Rivne Provincial Council, Sergei Kondrachuk, thus satisfying the collective complaint of clergy of the Rivne Diocese of the UOC.
As the Rivne Diocese explains, Kondrachuk has used his position to incite religious enmity and encourage the violent seizure of churches, violating the rights of UOC clergy and faithful.
A similar case was opened against Alexander Zarubin, the head of the Boyarka City Council, who swore he would transfer all canonical churches to the schismatics. Materials are also being prepared against local officials who participated in church seizures in various areas, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
