After sailing 11,000 nautical miles in a 34- foot sailboat across the Pacific from Washington to New Zealand, author Katherine González will discuss her new book, “The Co-Captain’s Log,” on Saturday, Jan. 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Blue Bird Coffee Company, located at 200 S Three Notch St. in Andalusia.
González will share stories of rogue waves and broken legs, encountering whales in the wild, and experiencing serendipitous hospitality throughout the journey. At various times through the morning, she will read excerpts from the book, talk about how growing up in landlocked Springfield, Missouri prepared her for life on the high seas, share photos from the expedition, and answer questions from the audience about what it’s like to cross the world’s largest ocean on a very small boat.
“The Co-Captain’s Log” is a collection of stories of her adventures in the San Juan Islands, West Coast of the U.S., Sea of Cortez, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Tonga, and New Zealand. Readers are invited to come aboard for a unique, multimedia reading experience that integrates audio, video, and newsletter-style components aspasted sails 3,000 miles non-stop from Mexico to French Polynesia. González’s book also includes a book club discussion guide and resources designed to supplement children’s curriculum.
“Katherine has a rare stylistic gift for bringing readers along for the ride,” says John Riise, Contributing Editor for Latitude 38 magazine. “‘The Co-Captain’s Log’ is as immersive as jumping into the crystal blue waters of the South Pacific.”
Katherine was born and raised in Springfield. She has ties to Andalusia — her mother is Becky (White) Rhoades, a 1970 graduate of Andalusia High School, and she is the niece of Greg and Jan White of Andalusia. She was sponsored as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student and Ambassadorial Scholar by Rotary Club of Springfield Southeast. She had only 30 minutes of sailing experience before she met and fell in love with a sailor in Washington. She learned to sail in Puget Sound before they set sail to cross the Pacific in 2021.
