Germany beat Sweden to win women's Olympic football gold for the first time

Dzsenifer Marozsan’s goal and Linda Sembrant own goal gift Germany their first ever women’s Olympic football gold as they beat Sweden 2-1 in the final in Rio. Although, Swede’s Stina Blackstenius pulled one back later on, but it’s just a mere consolation.

Find build up from the back resulted in a positive result as Marozsan put Germany ahead at the Maracana Stadium with a fine curling finish, and Sweden’s Sembrant gifted them a second by scoring an own goal after Marozsan’s free-kick hit a post.

Sweden threaten as they moved forward, and things later payed off when Blackstenius pulled one back from Kosovare Asslani’s low cross.

The come back didn’t work as Germany claimed first ever goal at women’s football event in Olympics, the competition which has only been played six times.

Meanwhile, this year’s medal was Germany’s fourth medal after they won bronze in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

For Sweden, it’s also their first ever Olympic medal as they took home silver in top flight.
