It’s been over a decade since Eighting helped create the great Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and they’re certainly trying to capture that spirit again in their next project.
While they finally revealed the game in motion for Evo Japan 2024 last week, Justin Wong was able to fight the developers themselves in Hunter X Hunter Nen Impact, which he’s now shared the high-level match footage for — that also happened to reveal Genthru as a playable character.
Although this is not the first gameplay we’ve seen, it is basically the first from someone who truly understands the game’s mechanics and what’s possible — and what’s possible is pretty crazy.
In the first few matches we get to see how important the air game is with aerial specials made specifically to hit opponents back down / on the ground that lets characters like Hisoka easily re-launch multiple times.
Starting around the 3:10 mark, the dev manages to pull off an almost 90% combo with Leorio that ends the match with his level 3 Super.
Things like jump cancels, tricky corner cross-ups, Bounce Guard, Happy Birthdays and Overgear certainly make the game look similar to MvC, and despite being a multi-Evo champion in Marvel, Justin finds himself on the receiving end of a brutal beatdown more often than not.
Although this is the debut of Genthru, the former Bomber leader doesn’t seem to accomplish much in the footage here, but we can probably expect he can do things with his Nen like set bombs on the opponent.
He joins the previously revealed Gon, Hisoka, Kurapika, Leorio, Killua, and Netero along with Machi Komacine and Uvogin, who were both unveiled at Evo Japan.
Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC though no release date has been given yet.
You can check out around 20-minutes of new footage of the game with Justin Wong discussing the matches and his thoughts on the upcoming 3v3 fighter.
