The polls have opened across the country as voting begins in the general election.
Voters will head to polling stations across the United Kingdom to cast their ballots until they close at 10pm.
Polling stations in 650 constituencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland opened at 7am this morning.
When the polls close in 15 hours, counting will begin straight away. At this point, broadcasters will announce the results of the combined BBC, ITV and Sky News exit poll.
Victory today for Rishi Sunak, the incumbent prime minister, would see the Conservative Party win an unprecedented fifth term. A triumph for Keir Starmer would see Labour return to power for the first time in 14 years.
The last election Labour won was in 2005, under the leadership of Tony Blair.
Meanwhile, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Ed Davey’s Liberal Democrats hope to take as many seats from the Conservatives as possible.
Writing on Twitter/X on Thursday morning, Keir Starmer said: “Change. Today, you can vote for it.”
Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party have posted a series of messages of the past few hours urging voters to “stop the Labour supermajority”.
Sir John Curtice, a polling expert, has declared “today is the day”.
Sir John, who is one of the election gurus tasked with sorting the exit poll, said: “In some countries people don’t get this opportunity or freedom to vote.
“Some are fighting for peace, democracy, equality and safety. The opportunity to walk into a polling station unhindered by war, intimidation or the impact of weather events is our right.”
