Gender and Protection Officer
JOB SUMMARY
With the technical backing of the Project Manager, MEAL manager and the Gender & Protection Sector Manager, The Gender & Protection Officer will be responsible for supporting and implementing the minimum measures for mainstreaming gender and protection as outlined by the Humanitarian Principles, the SPHERE Standards, BOWDI’s Policy on gender and approaches and WFP’s on Gender and Protection as well as the Inter Agency Standing Committee Guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Be responsible for monitoring and communicating to the Project Manager and the Gender & Protection Sector Manager any changes in the protection environment as noted during field monitoring;
- Ensure safe and confidential referrals of protection cases for the provision of assistance to BOWDI project team for immediate action.
- Support awareness-raising activities to affected population on mainstreaming protection and integrating gender and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
- Lead information provision and community consultation activities about the roll out of the project activities in all LGAs.
- Sensitize and engage with project management committees and other volunteers to implement awareness and communication of the protection key messages during the distribution process.
- Sensitize vendors on BOWDI’s code of conduct for staff and its affiliates on child Safeguarding, fraud, zero tolerance to sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse.
- Conduct feedback FGDs with project participants and community leaders on the impact of the assistance, gaps noted and recommendations post distribution for lessons learning and improvement.
- Capture the protection activities conducted during the distribution process, capturing challenges observed and recommendations and share with the project team.
- Ensure protection and gender activities are reported and integrated into BOWDI’s monthly/Quarterly narrative report that is shared with the donor.
- Ensure BOWDI visibility during the process.
- Facilitate referrals in the event of GBV disclosure and PSEA cases reported.
QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE/TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Social sciences; Psychology, Community Health, International Relations, Law, Community Development or relevant Social Sciences.
- At least 3 years’ experience in protection work supervisory responsibilities, program development, planning and implementation.
- Must have in-depth technical expertise on Protection, gender & protection mainstreaming, Women and Girls’ safe spaces programming, gender transformation/transformative approaches, and Gender Based Violence related issues including having a clear understanding of gender inequality, and issues surrounding discrimination and violence against women and girls.
- Must have experience with operationalizing GBV principles; Human Rights Law, Humanitarian principles and other relevant international standards in a humanitarian aid setting; Well versed with Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS).
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with local staff, beneficiaries, duty bearers and other stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft office -word, presentation, excel, access and outlook
- Proficient in community mobilization, challenging social norms/relations, Behaviour Change Communication and Case Management with good facilitation skills.
- Proven record of providing trainings and workshops on gender and Protection topics in a variety of settings.
- Excellent Analytical, Communication and Report writing skills; Excellent Negotiation and Conflict Resolution skills.
