Gary Neville lashes out on Ruben Amorim tactic

Manchester United’s disappointing season continued with another frustrating defeat, this time at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, leaving more questions about Ruben Amorim’s tactical approach.

United’s struggles this campaign have been well documented, with inconsistency, injuries, and structural issues preventing the team from finding any real momentum in the Premier League.

Amorim’s high-risk, attacking style has shown glimpses of promise, but defensively, United have been exposed far too often, leading to unnecessary dropped points.

Injuries have only made things worse, particularly in midfield, where United have been forced to field makeshift lineups due to key absences.

The loss of Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer ahead of the Spurs match forced Amorim to improvise, but the tactical gaps left in the team were brutally punished.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes were left to cover vast spaces in midfield, leading to a disjointed performance that left United chasing shadows for much of the game.

It was another display that showcased United’s lack of defensive cohesion, something that has haunted them throughout the season, and it drew strong criticism from one of the club’s most outspoken legends.

Former United captain Gary Neville was left fuming over the team’s structure, particularly pointing out the alarming gaps in midfield and questioning Amorim’s instructions.

Frustrated by the chaotic nature of United’s play, Neville singled out the enormous space between Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, calling it ‘absolute madness’.

“We just said about the distance between the two central midfield players.

“Look at where Casemiro is and where Bruno Fernandes is.

“That cannot be right.

“It breaks all rules in football.

“Look at them – absolute madness, that.”

The former right-back went further, slamming the overall structure of the team.

“They may score goals, but the structure of the team is awful,” Neville said.

“The gaps in that midfield, that’s a tactical thing – they’ve been told to do that.

“Bruno Fernandes is playing right wing.

“It’s embarrassing.”

He then compared United’s setup to youth football, insisting, “You wouldn’t see this in Under-9s or Under-10s football.

“There’s a reason for it.

“It’s because of what [Joshua] Zirkzee did against Newcastle when he kept having to come out to one side.”

Neville concluded by emphasizing how Amorim’s tactical decisions left the midfield completely exposed, stating, “What Amorim’s said is, ‘You stay in there’.

“But that means then it’s impossible for them two behind… that space in midfield there.

“It’s shocking.”
