Ms Irene Ugbo the Police Public Relations Officer of Cross River command of the Nigerian Police has confirmed that a Cross Riverian is dead as a result of the skirmish over a plot of land given to Fulani Herdsmen and the killing of a cow NegroidHaven can report authoritatively. Yesterday, reports filled in informing that one Mr Isong Nkanu Egbe, aka Dr Isong No Joke, a mortician and All Progressives Congress Itigidi councillorship aspirant is dead.
This incident occurred, our correspondent learnt, at Itigidi, the hometown of the former governor of Cross River, Senator Liyel Imoke and the headquarters of Abi LGA following an allegation bordering around lost of cow of Fulani Herdsmen.
Some sources say that Fulani herdsmen accused Itigidi community of killing one of their cows, and some chiefs and youth leaders were invited by policemen at Ugep to be interrogated. This development angered the youths who demanded that their chiefs be interrogated in Itigidi Divisional Police Headquarters instead.
However, the PPRO of the police, Ms Ugbo explained that there's a peace accord between Fulani herdsmen and Itigidi community which the Itigidi indigenes misread. The DPO of Police in Itigidi waded into the matter. It's when the traditional rulers of Itigidi where invited to Ugep Police station to resolve the crisis that Itigidi youths, misunderstanding the move of the police as arrest of their chiefs resulted into attacking the police station, the police retaliated and there's a casualty : 'They invited them for a peace accord. But, the youths didn't get the information very well, they stated a trouble thinking we were arresting the traditional rulers'.
'It was in the process of trying to attack the police —they were coming to burn down the police station and vehicle, so the police retaliated in which one of them was a victim in the process', Ugbo added. She said it was not the herdsmen that killed the Itigidi indigene.
