FRSC To Prosecute Driver Who Killed 17 In Ogun Crash

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has vowed that the driver responsible for a fatal road crash that claimed 17 lives in Gbara, Ogun State, will face prosecution.

He said that among the victims was an FRSC emergency rescue operative deployed to save lives at the scene.

The Corps Marshal disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer

Mohammed, who expressed regret over the loss of lives in the tragic multiple crash that occurred at 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 5, 2025, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and urged all road users to prioritise vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to speed regulations to prevent further tragedies.

According to official reports, the crash was caused by excessive speeding and brake failure, involving seven vehicles.

These include a white DAF truck (T14007LA), a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL752YC), a Honda saloon car (HET680), a Nissan pickup van belonging to the Nigeria Police Force (STF10204), two Bajaj motorcycles (AGG448Q and PKA214WS), and another DAF truck with no visible registration.

The Corps disclosed that the crash involved 18 individuals—12 male adults, five female adults, and one female child. Tragically, 17 of them, including the FRSC Marshal, lost their lives, while only one person survived with injuries.

Reacting to the incident, Mohammed stressed the urgent need to curb speed-related crashes, which he described as a growing concern.

“The consequences of speeding are devastating, and FRSC cannot afford to continue losing lives,” he said.

He added that the Corps is committed to ensuring accountability and would ensure the driver responsible is prosecuted while reinforcing FRSC’s ongoing efforts to hold reckless drivers accountable under the law.

While honouring the memory of the FRSC operative who died in active service, the Corps Marshal reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to road safety education and law enforcement.

He called on all stakeholders, motorists, pedestrians, and the public to join hands with the Corps in the campaign against speeding and reckless driving.

Similarly, an accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 5 pm at the Dutse Tipper Garage Bus Stop in Abuja, killing about eight people.
