Thanks to the big release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a lot of players who are newer to fighting games are getting their first ever time with some of the community’s most beloved games. Naturally, with each of these returning retro titles being over 20 years old by now, there’s a lot that has been discovered about these games that fresh fans simply won’t know just yet.
Fortunately, combo wizard and top notch content creator Desk has a ton of experience with the Versus series, and in a new video has delved deep into 1996’s X-Men vs. Street Fighter. There are oh so many things to learn about this early Versus game, and Desk’s latest features a look at combos, history, Easter eggs, cameos, infinites, and more for all of the characters on the Street Fighter side of the roster.
Starting with the Street Fighter series’ poster boy, Ryu, we are reminded that the wandering warrior first made his debut back in 1987 as the main protagonist of the very first Street Fighter game. Immediately following this fact, Desk gets into the juicy stuff by explaining that Ryu has infinite juggle combos tied to his heavy kick Tatsu.
Some of his win quotes hold Easter eggs and references to his own series as well. “You must defeat my Aerial Rave to stand a chance” is an obvious nod to the classic Street Fighter 2 quote, “You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance,” which simply replaces the mysterious and legendary Sheng Long reference with the actual name for air combos in the Versus series.
There are a ton of interesting references, cameos, and combos to behold here, but one of the coolest has to come from Akuma. Desk demonstrates that the raging demon can actually OTG (off the ground) after landing his Raging Demon super and not only convert into a full juggle combo, but can also transition right into an infinite.
Be sure to check out Desk’s full video below for more interesting insight into all of the Street Fighter characters in X-Men vs. Street Fighter. This includes some awesome cameos from other Marvel characters who aren’t playable in the game such as Jean Grey and Professor Xavier, among many other things.
