Earlier this week, we learned that NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games will be holding a special panel for Mortal Kombat 1 at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2024 this month. The companies initially noted that the docket would include a discussion about the game’s year 2, as well as what the future holds for it.
The official SDCC website has since updated to include more details about the upcoming show. We now have confirmation of some of the types of things we’ll be seeing revealed during the panel.
When fans first caught wind of this SDCC panel, they were quick to share their hopes that the presentation would include announcements about future DLC characters. From the sounds of it, that’s exactly what we’ll be getting.
The panel is officially called “Mortal Kombat 1: MORE Kombat!” and its official description on the website promises character reveals, new details about the story expansion, as well as new game features.
“Ed Boon, chief creative officer at NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of Mortal Kombat, joins actors Erika Ishii (Starfield, Fallout 76) and Kaiji Tang (Jujutsu Kaisen, Detective Pikachu videogames), as well as NetherRealm team members Marty Stoltz (cinematic development director) and Joshua Slingerland (principal cinematic artist) for a discussion on the continuing story, future fighters, and new game features that will be added to Mortal Kombat 1 for its second year,” the panel’s description states. “Moderated by Kahlief Adams (CEO of Spawn On Me and The Spawnies).”
This panel is shaping up to be quite big for Mortal Kombat 1. As we noted in our previous story, NetherRealm Studios initially revealed the full line up of main roster DLC characters when they first announced Kombat Pack 1, so there’s a good chance we might be seeing a similar reveal at SDCC for Kombat Pack 2.
Essentially, we could see a fresh batch of main roster contenders revealed by way of a teaser trailer, with some information regarding how many Kameo Fighters we’ll be getting in season 2.
There’s also confirmation that details on the upcoming story expansion will be discussed at the panel. Ed Boon previously outright stated that Mortal Kombat 1 will be seeing an addition to its cinematic story via DLC much like Mortal Kombat 11 did with its Aftermath expansion, so there’s also a chance of seeing a trailer for that here.
What will be very interesting to see is if NetherRealm and Warner Bros. decide to add a new name to the game with the story expansion, again like they did with MK11. We went from Mortal Kombat 11 to Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath with the big update, so perhaps we might see something added to Mortal Kombat 1, which would be nice as it would mean fans could more easily differentiate between the latest entry in the franchise and the very first one.
Just last month, a data miner by the name of Interloko claimed to have unearthed the identities of six DLC characters that are expected to comprise Kombat Pack 2. They said that Ghostface from the Scream movie series, Noob Saibot, Cyrax, Sektor, Conan the Barbarian, and Terminator’s T-1000 are all “100% confirmed” to be joining the game, but as always it’s smart to take things with a grain of salt.
The Mortal Kombat 1: MORE Kombat! panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 is taking place on Friday, July 26. It will be running from 2 p.m. PT to 3 p.m. PT.
