Mason Greenwood has now officially made his debut for the first time as a non-United player.
After 17 years at Old Trafford, the 22-year-old has now trodden onto the pitch in his new Marseille shirt as a complete departure from the Red Devils.
After a £26.6 million move, the winger is set to be at the French side for five years, with his contract running until 2029. His recent spell on loan at Getafe was a catalyst for interest around Europe which ultimately saw Marseille beat teams like Borrussia Dortmund, Juventus and Lazio to Greenwood’s signature.
Now, after playing his first game for the Ligue 1 side against Toulon, the French media have reacted to the young star.
French media’s reaction to Greenwood debut
French outlet Orange Actualites reviewed Greenwood’s performance, saying: “The Englishman distinguished himself with a few attempts without being able to score.”
Meanwhile L’Equipe commented the debut, saying: “Starting on the right side of the attack, he made his team benefit from his left leg. The 22-year-old Englishman did not try to force on sprints and dribbles, often sought the in-depth call of Amine Harit, who plunged from the axis to the right flank, and distinguished himself by a framed shot.”
However, Football 365 was less positive about the performance saying: “Only a few days after signing with the club, Mason Greenwood was able to participate in his first game with Marseille. The English winger played only one-half, like most players. A half-time during which he only distinguished himself by a fruitless strike”
No doubt Marseille will be hoping for the winger to find his feet quickly with the Ligue 1 side competing in the Champions League this year. Whilst the winger may see a return to Premier League pitches depending on the Champions League group draw, there’s no risk of the star playing against his former team, with United set to compete in the Europa League.
