Manchester United have been scouring the transfer market for a solution to the ongoing left-back problem the club have been facing.

Last season both the first and second choice left-backs, Luke Shaw and Tyrel Malacia were ruled out for extensive periods, with other injuries in defence also mounting up, forcing Erik ten Hag to use whatever limited resources he had to cover the gaps in the squad.

Right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were called upon to cover the left side, with midfielder Casemiro needed to cover the centre of defence.

In order to avoid these sorts of issues again next season, it’s vital for the Red Devils to bring a new left-back to Old Trafford.

Recent report have suggested that Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez is the favourite target for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new recruitment team, with Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth having also made the shortlist.

However now, reports from Spain claim that United are potentially turning to one of their former players to return to the club to fill the gaps.

Spanish publication AS have reported that ex-loanee Sergio Reguilon is being considered for a return to Old Trafford following an impressive stint at Brentford.

Reguilon was brought in last summer on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to support in defence, however only made 12 appearances before being sent back to Spurs in the winter, before being loaned out again to Brentford.

Fortunately for Reguilon, his loan spell at the Bees was much more successful with the Spanish defender making 16 appearances and even grabbed four assists, being used in left-back and in left midfield, showing his versatility.

The 27-year-old is entering the final year of his contract so this transfer window offers Spurs their last chance at cashing in on the defender before losing him for free at the end of his contract.

His stint at Brentford has not only caught the eye of United, but also West Ham United who were interested in the defender during his days on loan to Sevilla from Real Madrid, with Juventus also interested in the serial-loanee.

Spurs originally bought Reguilon for €30 million from Real Madrid back in 2020, however it’s unknown as of yet what price tag they’ll be placing on their defender.
