RIVERVIEW, Fla. (TCN) — A 26-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly fatally shooting a 61-year-old man in front of his grandson amid a road rage incident over the weekend.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 27, deputies responded to a report of a man who had been shot on U.S. Highway 301 and Bloomingdale Avenue. Deputies located the victim, identified by WTVT-TV as Steven Powers, with upper body trauma. He was rushed to a local hospital and died from his injuries.
Powers and his adult grandson were reportedly in a work van and saw a black Mazda driving recklessly. The driver, Kentavious Gholston, allegedly cut off Powers amid busy traffic.
According to WTVT, Powers honked at Gholston, who later began “brake checking,” and then they both parked. Powers went up to Gholston to hit him before Gholston grabbed his gun and allegedly shot Powers several times in the back. Per WTVT, Powers’ grandson exited the vehicle, but Gholston aimed the gun at him. Gholston reportedly drove off and ran a red light.
In a statement obtained by WTVT, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said, “He just watched his grandfather get executed.”
Gholston purportedly left behind a debit card, which investigators used to find him. Deputies also received video and dash cam footage showing the road rage incident and Gholston speeding off.
Gholston reportedly turned himself in and told deputies he threw the gun into a retention pond. He also informed deputies where he left his vehicle and that he removed the tag.
According to the sheriff’s office, Gholston faces charges of second-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, tampering with physical evidence, and domestic violence battery by strangulation. He remains held in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.
