Five Premier League transfers that could happen in the coming days including Newcastle’s move for Diego Carlos, Arsenal’s Arthur Melo loan and Andy Carroll’s Burnley switch

The January transfer window is in full swing and several high-profile deals have already been completed.

Newcastle have already landed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for £12million and Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa have also been busy, securing the signings of Philippe Countinho from Barcelona and Lucas Digne from Everton.

But which players could be the next to arrive in the Premier League?

Diego Carlos

Newcastle have made a fresh bid for the Sevilla defender and plan to sign two centre backs before the window closes, talkSPORT understands.

The Magpies failed in their original attempt to land the Brazilian, with an offer in the region of £25million rejected by the LaLiga side.

The Toon have now upped their offer to £28m, and it’s also understood they plan to land two centre backs this January.

Arthur Melo

Arsenal are hopeful of completing the loan signing of the Brazilian from Juventus, talkSPORT understands.

Internal talks began at the Emirates last week regarding bringing Melo to the club, and it is now understood that discussions are continuing to progress.

The 25-year-old has been identified as a suitable solution to Arsenal’s midfield woes having only made 29 appearances for the Old Lady.

There’s a reluctance from Juventus to let him go without a replacement, though, with one possible replacement being Ruben Loftus-Cheek of Chelsea.

Andy Carroll

Burnley could complete a surprise move to sign the former Newcastle striker, according to the Daily Mail.

Sean Dyche’s side are desperate to sign a new target man having lost Chris Wood to relegation rivals the Magpies earlier this week.

Carroll has spent recent months with Championship side Reading where he has scored one goal in seven games for the club.

With his short-term deal expiring this month it means that Dyche could look to secure a bargain deal for the towering target man.

Robin Olsen

Aston Villa have been among the busiest clubs in January so far but Steven Gerrard has already set his sights on completing another two deals.

The Villa Park outfit are hoping to seal a double swoop for Dundee United centre-back Kerr Smith and goalkeeper Olsen, claim the Athletic.

Smith, 17, is set to arrive in a £2m move from Scotland while Olsen could join on loan if Sheffield United agree to end his current stint at AS Roma.

Olsen made seven league appearances at Everton last season and would serve as back-up for Villa’s No.1 Emi Martinez.

Pablo Mari

The Arsenal defender is nearing a loan move to Italian outfit Udinese, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The Spaniard originally arrived at the Emirates on loan himself from Flamengo in January 2020 before the club signed him permanently that summer.

Mari, 28, has since fallen down the pecking order however following the signings of Gabriel and Ben White and has made just three appearances this season.
