It’s been almost six and a half years since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite released as the last official Versus game, and some fans have taken it into their hands to make their own.
After years of work and incremental updates, Madxruler has released the first playable demo for the fan project Sega vs. Capcom: The Next Level.
The demo currently only features Mega Man X and Sonic the Hedgehog as playable fighters, but there are slots on the character select screen for Street Fighter’s Ryu, Darkstalkers’ Morrigan, Rival Schools’ Batsu, Virtua Fighter’s Akira, Streets of Rage’s Axel, Alien vs. Predator’s Linn Kurosawa, Tales of Arcadia’s Vyse and Sakura.
This Sega vs. Capcom project is a 2v2 four-button fighting game with light and heavy kicks plus a tag switch and Exceed button for the special mechanics though it has single fighter teams available as well.
Both characters appear to have fairly extensive move sets already with attacks that will be familiar to fans like the X Buster, MMX boss attacks, the Z Saber and even using the Gaea Armor transformation for a Super.
The demo includes Arcade, Practice, Versus, Arcade Co-op, and the four-player Cross Fever modes though there’s more on the main menu that can’t be selected yet.
Sega vs. Capcom was first teased back in early 2021, and things have seemingly come a long way since that point with Madxruler sharing consistent updates along the way.
Although the project is looking pretty promising so far, it’s probably best not to get our hopes up too high since we don’t know what the future holds.
Capcom and Sega have typically been among the more relaxed Japanese developers / publishers when it comes to fan projects in the past, but that could all change at any point.
Also please note that we are not advocating for downloading this demo and to only run programs on your PC that your personally trust.
