The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has stated that the recent increase in corps members’ allowances has not been implemented due to the non-release of funds.
Recall that the Federal Government had last month approved an increase in corps members’ monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024.
A statement by the NYSC stated that the increment was confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated 25 September 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
“This is in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024,” the statement had said.
However, the government did not pay corps members the new allowance in September, despite the official announcement.
Speaking to BBC Hausa Service, the NYSC DG explained that the government has yet to release the funds required for the implementation of the new allowance.
He added that while the government has assured them that the allowance has been increased from 29 July 2024, the Scheme is not sure when it will be paid.
The DG added that the issue also affected his staff, disclosing that while their salaries were increased about four to five months ago, the increment has yet to be implemented.
“Not only corps members, but even our staff members’ salaries were increased about four to five months ago, but this has not yet been implemented. We are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, though the funds have not yet been released to us.
“The information we have does not specify when the new allowance will be paid, but we have been assured that their monthly allowance has been increased from 29 July 2024,” he said.
