The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has disclosed plans to upgrade infrastructure at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu and build a full cargo processing hub that will serve the South East.

But the plans is still being discussed between the Enugu State Government and the ministry.

The aviation ministry boss disclosed this in a post on X seen by THEWHISTLER.

He said, “The Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah, paid me a working visit to hand me a detailed proposal of cooperation between the Federal Government and that of Enugu State towards the upgrade of the infrastructure and the operational capacity of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

“We also discussed plans for the establishment of a full cargo processing hub at the airport, designed to serve the entire South East.”

Recall that in June last year, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Enugu State Governor revealed plans to partner in the upgrade of the international wing of the airport.

In May, the state govt and FAAN announced plans to set-up a committee for the project.

Mbah said, “So, when we think in numbers, in terms of logistics, we will be expecting over 100 flights to come into Enugu on a daily basis and the current infrastructure cannot handle it.

“Therefore, we are going to work with you to operationalise the international wing of the airport. We are also interested in constructing the cargo terminal and warehouses.”
